On 29 November non-governmental organizations that protect the interests of people with disabilities and their right to live a full life were celebrated and awarded during a ceremony in the National Library of Latvia. For three years in a row the ombudsman in cooperation with the National Library of Latvia and the Organization of People with Disabilities and their Friends \u201cApeirons\u201d have been organizing a competition \u201cAnnual Award for NGOs to Support People with Disabilities\u201d. The aim of the competition is to discover and notice the good and valuable work of non-governmental organizations that represent the interests of people with disabilities.
\nThis year 57 applications were received for the competition in six nominations – \u201cThe Loudest Voice\u201d, \u201cThe Promoter of Employment\u201d, \u201cThe Provider of Services\u201d, \u201cThe Developer of Education\u201d, \u201cThe Social Campaign\u201d, \u201cThe Protector of Children with Disabilities\u201d, 55 of which were handed over to the jury for evaluation. The jury were ombudsman Juris Jansons, deputy director of the National Library of Latvia Anda Lama\u0161a, president of the Executive Board of the Organization of People with Disabilities and their Friends \u201cApeirons\u201d Ivars Balodis, chairperson of the Social and Employment Matters Committee of the Latvian Parliament Aija Bar\u010da, representative of the Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments Ilze Rudz\u012bte, \u201cLatvijas Radio\u201d journalist Aidis Tomsons and opera singer Evita Z\u0101l\u012bte.
\nIt is important that the services available to people with disabilities are varied and provided in regions too. The competition jury decided that the main award in the nomination \u201cThe Provider of Services\u201d should go to the society \u201cCer\u012bbu sp\u0101rni\u201d (The Wings of Hope), which provides social services to adults and children with functional disabilities. The society also includes the sports club \u201cSp\u0101rni\u201d (The Wings), social enterprise \u201cPogotava\u201d, social support centre \u201cCer\u012bbu m\u0101ja\u201d (The House of Hope) and family assistance services. A Recognition Certificate was presented to the society \u201cAutism Support Centre in R\u0113zekne\u201d for various educational and developmental classes for children.
